Government CAN bring back next June but (?) may not. Strange atmosphere at present so all focused on delivering performance. Govt wants subsidy reaction, money is tight. Just received DfT request for next year business plan.  Concentration on service delivery. DO - may not have "road tested" services in the past. Assistive sequesters are record high. Also why people are travelling ans still getting used to new flows.  Strong demand where new services come in.

How do we move to integrated tickets?  Proposal Cornwall and West of England.

To explain my own non-appearance at the meeting:

The train I was planning to get from NLS, the 09:06, was horribly delayed - eventually arriving some 70+ minutes down.

While I was standing on the fairly basic platform at NLS still waiting for it, I felt increasingly unwell, so I decided to abort my journey.  I was sick when I got home, so I'm glad I didn't travel on that train to Taunton - which apparently arrived there 90 minutes down, despite skipping Weston-super-Mare.

I'm glad to read that the meeting still went well without us.

It was so helpful to hear examples of good/best practice + clear identification of what's needed to make a success of something, especially with regards to buses - and the value of identifying customer needs and also of partnerships. It's something that shone a glaring light on a couple of the current issues with buses local to me and it would be good to see the local operators (and local authority) more involved in Travelwatch Southwest.

There was some really good stuff coming from the audience too, particularly the person at the back towards the end of the day who spoke up on the need to ensure that people under, say, 26 years old were treated a lot better - yes, a minority are taking a complete liberty as far as public transport goes, but then, some public transport staff are leaning heavily into tarring the whole cohort with the same brush.

Trains are now running Bristol - Taunton following an earlier incident at Highbridge, but are not serving Weston-super-Mare due to a points failure unrelated to the incident at Highbridge.

Rail travel to Taunton is disrupted by a line closure ~Bridgwater. The 06:00 PAD-PNZ has been turned at Bristol and will run via Westbury.

Appropriately, the Innovation Centre is itself built on the site of an historic innovation - the first of the shortlived Grand Western Canal's lifts - the first to be put into commercial service in the UK.

A watching brief was kept during the construction of the centre's foundations, and some structures from the lift were revealed. The lift itself had a chequered start to its life, and required modification before it would work.

The structure with its modifications survived long enough to be recorded on the OS 1:500 plan for Taunton.

The venue - the Firepool Digital Innovation Centre - is a new one and walkable for the majority. Leave the station from platform 2 (the one you'll normally arrive at if you come on a train heading for Exeter and beyond) and walk ahead / left past the new multistory car park and cross the road to the venue.

My train from Nailsea & Backwell at 9:06 gets me to Taunton at 9:56.

I'm happy to stand around on the platform there, offering help to any of our members who may require assistance on their way to the venue.  It's really not that far - we can arrange it!

Our "Coffee Shop" forum is unique - each member who is a Frequent Poster or more is, or has been, someone who takes an interest in public transport toward the South West from London, and furthermore takes that interest rather beyond a one off / casual approach.   And those are the sort of members who will really gain from coming along to TWSW on Friday - to listen, learn and interact with others who are likeminded and with similar interests over and above their normal conventional groupings.  I encourage you to sign up and come along.

TravelWatch SouthWest is also unique - we bring in top quality speakers to our twice a year general meetings.  These are key players in the public transport scene - it's to your benefit to hear from them somewhat deeper and closer than otherwise available, and it's to their benefit to help get their message and methods out to those who are knowdlegable movers, shakers, critical and logical friends. I encourage you to sign up to come along.

Both the Coffee Shop and TravelWatch SouthWest are run by teams of volunteers and are free to participants.  Perhaps not unique, but highly unusual. I am used receiving briefing / seminar invites at a significant cost and rarely take them up; these commercial setups have a different motivation and an income target for the organisers and the lecturers, for whom the audience is to be addressed far more than listened to.   TWSW and the CoffeeShop listen and inform in a far more balanced and symbiotic way.   We can't go to extent of offering free travel to the event, though we at TWSW do provide teas, coffees and even a light buffet, but that's out of practicality on a day out and we would be concerned if people came along for the catering.

TWSW member's friend Giles Fearnley is talking candidly about getting the best opportunities and meeting the challenges to passengers within the possible bus operating frameworks going forward.
We have been chasing the final speaker for a while and finally, Nigel Blackler is going to let us into Cornwall's secret and ask if new legislation will offer everyone this opportunity as something new.
The final sessions is a panel where the room considers how the new way of doing things will enable the voice of user experience and ensuring it's value is captured.

A lot of water has flowed under the bridge with regard to TravelWatch SouthWest in the last six weeks since I wrote "Hold the date", and the water continues to flow.     The TWSW date has been in their calendar with several excellent speakers lined up for a while, and is also the date that GWR have chosen for their central region timetable meeting.   Oops - except that in an example of partnership and innovation, GWR and TWSW have come together to combine the events on that day - 11th October 2024.  Makes utter sense.

Physical meeting to be held in Taunton, and arranged to work well with train times for those arriving and later leaving in all directions.   Venue will be within a very short distance of the station.

If you are on the TWSW list of members or associates you should be hearing over the next 10 days or so.  If you are in any doubt and would like to attend to represent your group or community or specialist interest, please let me know; I am well positioned to officially spring you an invite.

I'm just back; it was a good day with enthusiastic talks from Natalie Edwards of SWR, who seems pretty passionate about improving services on the WoE line, and Dan Okey on placemaking and stations. James White, who is now seconded to Western Gateway STB, also did a good piece on what they're up to in terms of the strategic view. Nothing all that new, but good to see how everyone keeps up their enthusiasm despite challenges around funding and direction.

It was really REALLY good to welcome Bryony and Chris to the West Wilts Rail User Group meeting last night and I'm delighted to hear just how well David Northey has settled in on their board and indeed as their new chair.  I was sad to give up my place on the TWSW board, but events and my abilities following on prove it was exactly the right course of action for both TWSW and me.

 
The AGM of TravelWatch SouthWest marks the end of my being on the board, as my second three year term comes to an end.  I have enjoyed my time there - a lovely group of fellow directors and some very real friends, but at the same time I have felt like a fish out of water amongst the professionals. Any contributions I have been made have been slim, especially of late, so I have chosen not to stand again rather than seat-block.  I am delighted to hear of one nomination (there may be others) to join the board which, should he be elected (astonished if he is not!) will provide a far greater strength than I ever could.

Very odd - I spent all day yesterday at the GWR Stakeholder conference sat next to the Secretary, Briony & Chris Irwin & neither said anything about the change, not even when I said I couldn't attend in person. I can, however, by zoom, so I am one happy bunny.


It was probably one of the best Stakeholder events that GWR have run (Hi BobM!) and no doubt several of you were present using their online platform. I thought the MD of Passenger Services, Peter Wilkinson was very candid about where rail was going in the eyes of his masters.

TWSW General Meeting: Your Vision for Getting Around by Public Transport

The TravelWatch SouthWest meetings are back. These sessions provide a unique opportunity for passengers and communities to engage with operators, policy makers, and local transport authorities together.

Remarkable things happen when you get the right mix of people in the room.

This meeting revolves around the need to create a vision and discussing the key questions:
* How will connectivity patterns change in the future and what role will public transport play?
* What support do places/communities need to grow and change?
* What are the community priorities and how can we work together to support them?
* Where is the funding going to come from and how can we deliver more with less?
* How can we collaborate to meet our shared objectives?

Professor Graham Parkhurst (University of West of England and TWSW Director) is setting the socio/economic/environmental scene,

Nigel Blackler (Cornwall Council) will be inspiring the audience around unity of vision and delivering an outcome which improves journey experience quality across the region and supports communities.

Mark Hopwood, (Managing Director, GWR) considers the way in which rail operators can address passenger need in light of the emerging social, economic, and environmental themes.

Go South Coast examine the ways in which can adapt to meet the evolving scene and highlights the essentials steps to be taken now.

Further speakers are to be announced.

 
A date for your diary - speakers 90% confirmed - subject to such things as rail strikes leaving Taunton hard to reach, new Covid lockdowns, trains withdrawn due to cracked frames, snow drifts, general election the previous day, etc.   TravelWatch SouthWest at The Brew House in Taunton - Friday 21st October 2022.   Primarily a live event - we may have a limited on line feed for part of the day. 

 
Sadly, I think the right decision (to cancel) has been made.  It would have been somewhere in the impossible / impractical / worrisome / unforecastable / longwinded arena for some delegates to get there, with a significant risk of them having issues getting home later.  It would not be sensible for TWSW to encourage people to come in those circumstances, and a dis-service to members to put them in a position where they had to chose between missing the meeting and taking uncomfortable risks to get there and back.

TWSW may run a short(er) online session that day. It would not be a direct replacement for the General Meeting, but the secretarial is mindful that many members have next Friday clear in their diaries and would benefit from a networking session talking around a key topic.  I will follow up with (probably) a separate thread within 48 hours.

Just come off the TWSW board where my term ends at the December AGM. General meeting scheduled for 24th June, very strong confirmed speaker line up.

Although it is nice that every one introduces themselves and who they represent,

I do find it difficult to find those who I might want more information from especially after approx sixty persons names have been read out.

Could I suggest a number against the persons name on the A4 sheets that are handed out.

Then a sticky label with the persons number on,as opposed to the name,

this saves trying to work out and straining your eyes to see the persons name on the badge.

The previous general meeting of TravelWatch SouthWest (TWSW) was held in Taunton two years ago "on this day" as I write - 2nd March 2020.  Just two weeks later, we were in lockdown and though we have met very productively in Webinars and via Zoom a number of times since, and our board has met and been active too, we have sorely missed the "In Real Life' meetings.



So I'm delighted to announce that the General Meetings will be able to resume soon - the first one to be on Friday 20th May 2022 at a Taunton venue.  We already have a full package of topics to be covered in the sessions during the day, and VIPs (political, operational technical and academic) who are keen to talk or to sit on a panel and discuss all sorts of matters. Save the date in your diary - technically a members meeting, but we welcome any [reasonable] group to join and send a rep, and also independent individuals if we're the right forum for them.

So much is and has been going on that we risk overpacking a general meeting, and so we'll also be running a further series of Webinars / Zoom sessions - roughly once a month - through the spring and in to the summer.  I will add dates and subjects on the Coffee Shop as they are announced.

I suppose - for those who aren't aware - that I should clarify that I'm a member of the TWSW board, which is why I write "we". I do feel very much out of my depth amongst very throughful, much experienced, and properly trained people there, but the role has helped me learn and also feed back forum and passenger views. The board membership is for a three year term and expires this autumn - the AGM will be on 25th November or 2nd December and I don't know if I'll be going for another term.

 
[TWSW] If you represent a member group ... formal zoom meeting details should be with you for Friday evening which is - yikes - tomorrow now.   At any time, one of the nightmares the TWSW secretary has is keeping up with who's who for which organisation, who's changed their email address or name, etc.  And this has been a year of exceptional change; please let me know if you should have received the following and have not done so.
